Why Journalism matters Cat 2
Journalism, the collection, preparation, and distribution of news and related commentary and feature materials through such print and electronic media newspapers, magazines, books, blogs, webcasts, podcasts, social networking and social media sites, and e-mail as well as through radio, motion pictures, and television. The word journalism was originally applied to the reportage of current events in printed form, specifically newspapers, but with the advent of radio, television, and the Internet in the 20th century the use of the term broadened to include all printed and electronic communication dealing with current affairs.
The earliest known journalistic product was a news sheet circulated in ancient Rome: the Acta Diurna, said to date from before 59 BCE. The Acta Diurna recorded important daily events such as public speeches. It was published daily and hung in prominent places. In China during the Tang dynasty, a court circular called a bao, or “report,” was issued to government officials.
Despite the criticisms that have been levelled at news organizations in recent years and the many difficulties they face, journalism matters. It matters, argues Schudson, because it orients people daily in the complex and changing worlds in which they live. It matters because it offers a fact-centered, documented approach to pertinent public issues. It matters because it keeps watch on the powerful, especially those in government, and can press upon them unpleasant truths to which they must respond. Corruption is stemmed, unwise initiatives stopped, public danger averted because of what journalists do.
The most important difference between journalism and other forms of non-fiction writing is the idea of objectivity. Journalists are expected to always keep an objective mindset as they interview sources, research events, and write and report their stories.
There are four main types of journalism investigative journalism, political journalism, crime journalism and business journalism.

Investigative journalism is a form of journalism in which reporters deeply investigate a single topic of interest, such as serious crimes, political corruption, or corporate wrongdoing. An investigative journalist may spend months or years researching and preparing a report.

Political journalism aims to provide voters with the information to formulate their own opinion and participate in community, local or national matters that will affect them. According to Edward Morrissey in an opinion article from theweek.com, political journalism frequently includes opinion journalism, as current political events can be biased in their reporting. The information provided includes facts, its perspective is subjective and leans towards one viewpoint.

Crime journalists research and write articles about criminal events for newspapers, magazines, television and other media.

Business journalism this area of journalism provides news and feature articles about people, places and issues related to the business sector. Most newspapers, magazines, radio, and television-news shows include a business segment. Detailed and in-depth business journalism may appear in publications, radio, and television channels dedicated specifically to business and financial journalism.

Journalism can be distinguished from other activities and products by certain identifiable characteristics and practices. These elements not only separate journalism from other forms of communication, they are what make it indispensable to democratic societies. History reveals that the more democratic a society, the more news and information it tends to have.
Pies gun Jordan De Goey
gets slammed and finned
Collingwood’s penalty handed to Jordan De Goey for last weekend’s incident in Bali has copped more criticism from football pundits. De Goey was handed a suspended $25,000 fine until the end of the season pending good behaviour, with the club and its CEO Mark Anderson “strongly condemning” his overseas antics and expressing disappointment in the way it “demonstrated disrespect towards women.” Port Adelaide great Kane Cornes was also left underwhelmed by the Magpies’ punishment to De Goey, who cited an ADHD diagnosis last year for a reason behind his behaviour in his own written apology.
As he has previously, Cornes also held Collingwood accountable for letting the out-of-contract star get on the plane to Bali in the first place given his chequered history, calling for the club to review its processes. “‘Disrespect to women can’t be tolerated and Jordan understands the significance of this. I would have thought probably four games and a $10,000 fine,” Cornes told SEN SA Breakfast. “And to hear nothing — he hasn’t been sanctioned. Let’s cut the absolute c**p — there is no fine, there is no penalty. So how seriously have they taken it?”

Tragic details emerge after young man killed at Brisbane city train station
A young man has been murdered during a fight between two groups which left a Brisbane city train station a bloodied scene.
The 24-year-old died from his injuries sustained in the incident at Fortitude Valley train station around 4am on Monday.
Police would not say what caused the injuries or how the altercation began, but have declared a crime scene and launched a murder investigation.
The man was in a group which fought another group in what police described as a “public thoroughfare” area of the station, but it’s understood the incident occurred in a food court inside the premises.
Police officers had been monitoring CCTV of the area when they noticed the “disturbance” taking place.

A field east of Runway 30-Right and the Cessna fell into a water retention pond.” Two people were in each plane and all four died, according to city fire department officials. C0llingwood get lucky against the struggling crows
The clutch Magpies get it done again.
Collingwood has outlasted a gallant Crows outfit in an Adelaide Oval thriller for its eighth-straight victory in Scott Pendlebury’s 350th game, marking the Magpies’ best win streak since 2012.
Trailing by three points at three-quarter time, the Pies booted three of the first four goals of the final term before holding off a late charge from the Crows, prevailing by five points, 14.7 (91) to 13.8 (86).

Fox Sports Apologizes for Placing Team Logos Over 9/11 Memorial
The Yankees routed the Red Sox, 14–1, in a laugher Saturday night, but an insensitive graphic on the Fox Sports broadcast of the game was no laughing matter.
The game was played at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, and Fox Sports showed an aerial shot of lower Manhattan at one point during the broadcast. However, logos of both teams and Fox’s “Baseball Night in America” logo were superimposed over the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
Not surprisingly, many viewers noticed the mistake and criticized the decision on social media. A Fox Sports spokesperson issued a statement Sunday morning apologizing for the graphic.

WHY PIES SCORED FATHER-SON GUN AT DISCOUNTED PRICE

Three goals from 40 disposals and 10 intercepts — numbers you would normally associate with a star player in the prime of their football career.
But that stat line on Saturday belonged to Nick Daicos a 19-year-old in just his 17th AFL game.
And, somehow, the Pies snapped him up at Pick 4 last year. The classy defender has surged into Rising Star favouritism thanks to incredibly consistent and efficient performances across 2022, averaging 26.6 disposals, 5.2 intercepts and 403m gained. The evidence is now too compelling to shun: Daicos is putting together arguably the best season by a first-year player in the modern AFL era. There’s been some pushback to that suggestion from some fans and commentators they’d argue he’s not being tagged and winning a stack of uncontested ball but any other half-back with Daicos’ return would be in the All-Australian conversation. “It just seems to be going to another level,” Pies coach Craig McRae said of Daicos post-game on Saturday. “I haven’t seen (a first year like it) and he’s just doing it in different ways too.”
Billy seals the deal
Collingwood has fought back at the death to defeat Essendon by four points in an MCG miracle thanks to a Jamie Elliott goal after the siren for its ninth-straight win to climb into the top four.
It comes after the Magpies surrendered a 37-point lead at quarter time before trailing by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter as the Bombers looked like charging home.
President with Vouge in the middle of war
Vladomir Valenky, president of Ukraine, with his wife Olena Zelensky. This isnt vouges first political photo shoot. While the couple spoke about their nearly two decades of marriage, shared history, their time apart from children who have to be separated due to the ongoing war and Ukraine's future, they found themselves under fire for their recent Vogue photoshoot. Russia's invasion which began in February, has created a wreck in Ukraine with thousands of dead and several more fleeing their homes in search for safety. So when people saw a picture of Zelenska, dressed in black gown and coat, posing in front of wreckage caused by the war, as soldiers guard her, several people thrashed the Ukraine President and the First Lady.
Abbey Road
What clicks most throughout Abbey Road is a returned focus to solid rock tracks and brilliant guitar music. While the likes of “Here Comes the Sun” is by no means without instrumentation, the core is still its twinkling, clean guitar line and airy vocals breezing into left and right ears respectively. On the other hand “I Want You” is a moody, raw outing, with rarely heard cracked screams and a growing surge of noise through its eight-minute playtime.
Highlights: "Come Together", "Something", "I Want You (She's So Heavy)", "You Never Give Me Your Money", "Golden Slumbers"/"Carry That Weight"/"The End".
